Brazilian state assemblies name women to lead key legislative commissions

The Minas Gerais State Legislative Assembly (ALMG) approved a fully female leadership for the special commission that will evaluate deputy Ione Pinheiro’s nomination to the state Court of Accounts. Deputy Lohanna will serve as president, Deputy Sheila as vice‑president and Deputy Nayara Rocha as rapporteur, with the committee set to hold a public hearing on July 7.

In Rio de Janeiro, a court decision reinstated PSOL deputy Renata Souza as chair of the Assembly’s Women’s Rights Commission, overturning a move by the legislative president that would have installed a PL‑aligned deputy. The judge ruled the removal violated internal rules and could jeopardise the confidentiality of about 700 women victims served by the commission’s “Sala Lilás.”
