Brazilian states set varying alcohol restrictions for 2026 elections

Brazilian states are implementing varying alcohol sale restrictions, known as ‘Lei Seca’, ahead of the 2026 elections to maintain public order.

In Pará, the Civil Police have issued an ordinance prohibiting the sale, distribution, and supply of alcoholic beverages from 0:00 to 18:00 on both the first and second rounds of voting. This restriction covers bars, restaurants, convenience stores, and street vendors. The measure also suspends musical performances and public events during these hours to reduce the risk of conflict.

In contrast, the Public Security Secretariat of Paraná confirmed that the state will not adopt alcohol restrictions this year, opting to rely on integrated security planning to ensure a peaceful voting process.

Meanwhile, Piauí has adjusted its restrictions following a request from the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants (Abrasel). The Public Security Secretariat of Piauí reduced the prohibition period to 18 hours, covering the window from 0:00 to 18:00 on election day, rather than the previously planned 24-hour ban.
