Another research paper from the Federal University of Bahia analysed income inequality in Brazil's Northeast from 2016 to 2023 using Gini‑index decomposition. The study noted a temporary decline in inequality in 2020 linked to emergency aid, with subsequent increases before 2021 and a modest recovery thereafter. Social transfer programmes such as Bolsa Família and minimum‑wage policies were identified as crucial for mitigating disparities, while the share of labor income continued to fall, underscoring the need for structural reforms and productive sector development.
