Brazilian Supreme Court justices face corruption allegations and impeachment calls

Allegations of corruption involving Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) justices have triggered significant public outcry and institutional scrutiny. Transparency International Brazil described revelations regarding Justice Kassio Nunes Marques as “extremely grave,” following reports of alleged benefits received from former banker Daniel Vorcaro, including luxury travel and use of mansions.

Investigations by the Federal Police into Vorcaro’s communications suggest potential conflicts of interest involving legal contracts. One reported contract involving the spouse of a judge could potentially yield up to R$ 427 million in success fees related to sugar and alcohol institute processes. Additionally, reports have surfaced regarding Justice Alexandre de Moraes, involving alleged communications with Vorcaro and legal contracts linked to his wife’s law firm.

A recent Atlas/Estadão poll indicates that these scandals have impacted public perception of the STF. The survey found that 60.5% of respondents support the impeachment of Justice Dias Toffoli, while 49.8% support the impeachment of Justice Alexandre de Moraes, reflecting a segment of the population that believes there is sufficient evidence to remove the magistrates from their positions.
