Brazilian towns Tupã and Apucarana cut Aedes aegypti infestation

In the municipality of Tupã, a monitoring program using 80 ovitraps per cycle reported a sharp decline in mosquito egg counts between February and June 2026. The Ovitramp Positivity Index fell from 79.32 in April to 48.84 in May and held at 51.25 in June, while the Egg Density Index dropped from 121.6 to 37.73 in the same period. Correspondingly, the town recorded only 31 dengue cases and five chikungunya cases from January to May, far fewer than the previous year.

Similarly, Apucarana’s health authority, after installing 426 ovitraps city‑wide, observed the Ovitramp Positivity Index at 21% and an Egg Density Index of 24. The municipality reported 54 dengue cases with no deaths. Officials attribute the reductions to continued source‑elimination efforts, community cooperation, and seasonal temperature drops that curb mosquito breeding.
