Brazilian TV networks vie for Sunday audience lead
Globo is developing a permanent Sunday sports broadcast, internally titled “Central do Esporte,” to follow the Fantástico slot. The network plans to have Tadeu Schmidt host the show without former sports commentator Galvão Bueno, aiming to strengthen open‑air sports coverage and pre‑empt a possible expansion of sports programming by rival SBT.
At the same time, Record’s Sunday news magazine “Domingo Espetacular” posted strong ratings in the first half of 2026, averaging 6.6 points and 11.7% share in the Greater São Paulo market. The programme’s surge, boosted by live coverage of the Campeonato Paulista, placed it in second position behind Globo and ahead of SBT’s Sunday lineup, supporting Record’s strategy to solidify its vice‑leadership on Sunday evenings.
Both moves illustrate the intensifying competition among Brazil’s major broadcasters to capture Sunday night viewers and advertising revenue.
