Brazilian Universities Face Ranking Drop and Push for Future‑Work Skills

Recent international university rankings show a decline for Brazilian institutions. The University of São Paulo, long considered the leading university in Latin America, has fallen from top positions, and most Brazilian universities recorded lower scores than the previous year. Analysts cite stronger investment by foreign universities, heightened global competition in scientific output, funding challenges, and differing ranking methodologies as contributing factors.

At the same time, the World Economic Forum stresses that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence will reshape the labour market. It identifies adaptability, critical thinking, creativity, effective communication, collaboration and digital literacy as essential competencies for graduates by 2030. Brazilian universities are urged to embed these skills in curricula, offer interdisciplinary projects, and increase exposure to AI and digital tools to prepare students for the evolving workplace.
