Brazilian university international ranking trends

Brazilian higher education institutions have faced scrutiny regarding their international standing and curriculum relevance. Initial reports indicated a general decline in rankings for many Brazilian universities, including the University of São Paulo (USP), which was attributed to increased global competition, funding challenges, and shifting ranking methodologies. During this period, there were calls for universities to integrate digital literacy and artificial intelligence skills to meet future labor market demands.

However, subsequent data from the Shanghai Ranking highlighted specific successes for the University of São Paulo. The institution maintained its position among the top 150 global universities for the eighth consecutive year, remaining the highest-ranked institution in Brazil and Latin America. While facing broader regional ranking pressures, USP demonstrated significant global strength in specialized disciplines, such as Dentistry and Oral Sciences, where it ranked 6th, and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, where it ranked 9th.
