Brazilian Young Senators approve immigrant student support policy

Participants of the Brazilian Young Senator Program have approved three legislative proposals aimed at supporting immigrant and refugee students, expanding youth opportunities, and preventing violence against women and girls. These approved texts will be converted into legislative suggestions and forwarded to the Senate's Human Rights Commission (CDH) for potential processing as formal bills.

The primary proposal, Senate Young Bill (PLSJ) 1/2026, establishes a National Policy for the Support and Monitoring of Immigrant Students. The policy seeks to address linguistic and cultural barriers, combat xenophobia, and assist students in school adaptation. The text includes provisions for foreign language courses for teachers and adapted educational materials.

In a tribute to the program's participants, the policy was named the 'Juan Guevara Law' following an amendment by Tavine Pietra de Almeida Lara. The name honors Juan Jose Ramirez Guevara, a Venezuelan immigrant and young senator representing Roraima, serving as an example of how inclusion and education can overcome social and cultural barriers.
