Brazil Jovem Senador program activities
Overview
The 2026 edition of Brazil’s ‘Jovem Senador’ (Young Senator) program focused on the theme ‘Democracy on social networks: how to build a healthy debate.’ The program’s essay contest encouraged public school students to examine issues such as misinformation, freedom of expression, and algorithmic filter bubbles. The contest saw record participation with 239,449 students from 5,361 high schools, with female winners accounting for 85% of the selected group.
Following the contest, the Brazilian Senate hosted 27 winners for a ‘Legislative Experience Week’ from August 17 to August 21. These students, representing all 26 states and the Federal District, participated in activities regarding the functioning of the Legislative Power. The program concluded with the approval of three legislative proposals to be forwarded to the Senate’s Human Rights Commission (CDH) as legislative suggestions. These include the ‘Lei Juan Guevara’ (Juan Guevara Law) to support immigrant students, as well as measures to expand youth opportunities and prevent violence against women and girls.
Looking ahead, the Brazilian Senate has announced the theme for the 2027 Jovem Senador essay contest: ‘O Brasil delas: como ampliar a participação das mulheres nos espaços de poder’ (Their Brazil: how to increase women's participation in spaces of power). Program head George Cardim stated the theme aims to stimulate reflection on obstacles to female participation and encourage proposals to expand women's roles in decision-making processes. The 14th edition also featured the program’s first entirely female Board of Directors, led by President Iolanda Ribeiro and Vice-President Maria Grasielle de Souza Félix.
