Brazil's 2026 electorate ages and becomes more educated

Brazil will hold its 2026 general elections on 4 October with an electorate of about 158.7 million voters, up 1.5 % from 2022. The share of seniors (60 years or older) rose to 23.6 % – 37.5 million people – while the 21‑34 age group fell to 25.9 % of the total. Overseas voters increased by 31.8 % to 918,876.

In the municipality of Venâncio Aires (Rio Grande do Sul), the voter roll shows 53,374 eligible voters. Compared with 2022, the share of voters with only incomplete primary education fell, while those with complete or incomplete secondary education grew to 22.97 % and 13.41 % respectively. Holders of a university degree rose slightly to 9.22 %. Illiteracy dropped from 3.3 % to 2.81 % of voters. These trends indicate a gradual rise in educational attainment alongside an overall aging of Brazil’s electorate.
