Brazil's Acre and Sorocaba Report Surge in Severe Respiratory Hospitalizations

In June 2026, Acre recorded its highest monthly peak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SRAG) admissions, with 103 cases reported in just six days. The surge pushed adult intensive care units at hospitals Huerb 01 and 02 to 100% occupancy, leaving only a handful of ICU and ward beds available. Children aged 2‑4 and seniors over 60 remain the most vulnerable groups, and laboratory testing identified a wide range of circulating viruses, including respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus, multiple influenza strains, SARS‑CoV‑2 and adenovirus.

Meanwhile, the city of Sorocaba saw a steady rise in respiratory illness throughout 2026, reporting 421 SRAG cases and 27 deaths (a 6.4% fatality rate) between epidemiological weeks 1 and 21. Influenza accounted for 98 confirmed infections and eight deaths; COVID‑19 contributed 17 cases and one death, with many cases remaining unidentified. Hospital visits for flu‑like symptoms more than doubled from January to May, driven by increased circulation of influenza A/B and RSV. Health officials have emphasized free vaccination for all residents aged six months and older to curb severe outcomes.

Both regions are intensifying monitoring and prevention measures as the co‑circulation of multiple respiratory pathogens strains local health services.
