Brazil's Acre Consumer Agency Holds First Debt Renegotiation Fair for Elderly

The Acre State Consumer Protection Institute (Procon) began a four‑day Debt Renegotiation Fair on June 22 in Rio Branco, open to all consumers and giving special attention to seniors, who are often targeted by predatory credit offers. The event, running until June 25, allows attendees to negotiate directly with major lenders including Banco do Brasil, Itaú, Caixa Econômica Federal, Saerb and Energisa, under the coordination of the National Consumer Secretariat, the Brazilian Procons Association, the Central Bank and the Brazilian Banking Federation. Organisers highlighted the fair’s role in promoting financial inclusion and providing personalized guidance to older adults.

Separately, Brazilian consumer‑rights guidance explains that, under the Consumer Defense Code, negative credit entries must be removed after five years, though the underlying debt remains. After this period, creditors cannot pursue judicial or extrajudicial collection actions, but they may still enforce secured contracts such as vehicle or property liens. Consumers are advised to verify the removal of negative records and, if necessary, file complaints with consumer protection bodies.
