Brazil's agribusiness grapples with record rural delinquency as innovation credit line rolls out
Data from the Serasa Experian Agro Bulletin shows Brazil's rural indebtedness hit a historic high in 2025, with 8.2% of producers overdue on payments beyond 180 days. The North region led the rankings, highlighted by Amapá's 19.9% delinquency rate, while the South posted the lowest at 5.3%. Analysts cite rising production costs, tighter credit, climate volatility and commodity price swings as drivers of the squeeze.
In response, the National Monetary Council approved a new financing scheme for agribusiness innovation, channeling resources from the Fundo de Amparo ao Trabalhador (FAT). The line targets individual producers and small‑scale entrepreneurs, offering monthly rates around 3.5% and repayment terms up to 60 months. Officials say the credit will help acquire technology, automation and digital tools to boost productivity and support the sector's post‑pandemic recovery.
