Brazil's Supreme Court extends Bolsonaro's home detention and orders seizure of his firearms
Supreme Court minister Alexandre de Moraes kept former president Jair Bolsonaro in humanitarian home detention for health reasons, with no set end date. In the same decision he ordered the immediate confiscation of all weapons registered to Bolsonaro, cancelling his gun‑carrying license and his Collector, Sport Shooter and Hunter (CAC) permit. The order lists ten firearms – rifles, pistols and shotguns – that must be turned over to the Federal Police within 48 hours, including a Glock 9 mm found with an army sergeant in a routine checkpoint.
Moraes cited the lack of evidence for a “grave fault” as judged by the Prosecutor‑General’s Office, stating “A efetiva consumação da ‘falta grave’, entretanto, não foi comprovada.” The former president’s defense argues he did not commit a serious violation. The measures aim to prevent any risk of self‑harm or violence while Bolsonaro receives medical treatment under electronic monitoring and restrictions on communication and visitation.
