Brazil's Amazon alerts drop 36.9%, lowest level since 2016 FAST-MOVING
Satellite monitoring by INPE's Deter system shows that deforestation alerts in Brazil's Amazon Legal fell to 2,874.38 km² between August 2025 and July 2026, a 36.87% reduction from the previous year and the smallest figure since the series began in 2016. The alert area is 55.6% below the ten‑year average (2015/16‑2024/25).
State‑level cuts were led by Mato Grosso (‑49%), Amazonas (‑46.7%) and Rondônia (‑41.2%); Roraima was the only state with an increase, up 32.5%. In the Cerrado biome alerts fell 7.8% to 5,119.46 km².
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva highlighted the results as evidence that Brazil can reach its zero‑deforestation target for 2030 if the current pace continues. He referenced the reinstated Amazon Action Plan (PPCDam) and recent IBAMA embargoes of 350,000 ha of illegal clearing in 2026 (815,000 ha nationwide since 2023). The Climate Observatory praised the data, noting the drop improves the odds of a historic low when the official Prodes figures are released later in the year.
