Brazil's Anatel overhauls fixed‑line DDDs and approves new mobile spectrum for São Paulo

The Brazilian telecom regulator Anatel completed a nationwide revision of the Fixed Telephone Service (STFC) for the state of São Paulo. City‑by‑city tariff limits were replaced by a DDD‑wide system, so calls between municipalities that share the same area code (DDD 11‑19) are now classified as local and charged at lower rates. The change simplifies billing and reduces the number of tariff zones from thousands to the 67 existing DDDs.

In a related move, Anatel granted TIM authorization to use new 2.5 GHz frequency bands in São Paulo. The operator received secondary‑use licenses for a 15 MHz block covering 51 municipalities and a 35 MHz block reaching up to 115 municipalities, including areas of the southwestern Greater São Paulo region. The spectrum expansion is intended to increase mobile data capacity and alleviate congestion on the network.
