Brazil telecom rollout and price drop
Overview
Anatel’s first‑quarter 2026 report confirmed that the average price of a mobile gigabyte fell to R$ 5.46, a 10.9 % drop from the previous year, while average data usage rose 21 % to 6.5 GB per subscriber. The agency highlighted regional gaps, with the South at about R$ 7.12 per GB and the North offering the lowest rates. At the same time, 4G/5G coverage in Brazil’s agricultural zones jumped from 18.7 % in 2024 to 33.9 % in 2025, an 81 % increase, spurring digitalisation across agribusiness, logistics, energy and mining. Industry voices, such as Carlos Agusti of Nordian, stressed that continuous connectivity is now as essential as energy or transport for automation. The Associação Brasileira de Operadoras Móveis Virtuais (Abratual) continues to dispute Anatel’s pricing figures, arguing that they rely on inaccurate operator data. The Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade) gave final approval, without restrictions, to Alares’ R$190 million acquisition of Oquei Telecom, giving Alares full ownership of the fixed‑line operator and extending its fiber network to about 30 interior municipalities of São Paulo, cementing its position among the top ten broadband providers. In July, Anatel granted TIM a secondary authorization to use 2.5 GHz spectrum in eight states and the Federal District, a move aimed at expanding mobile capacity and easing congestion through 2025‑2031. The authorization covers specific blocks at 2577.5 MHz (15 MHz bandwidth) and 2602.5 MHz (35 MHz bandwidth), is valid until 25 May 2031 and enables TIM to boost capacity in 18 cities, including Brasília, while remaining secondary to the primary license holder. The regulator’s 2025‑2026 tactical plan reduced the investment budget to R$25.72 million, a 54.8 % cut from the previous year, while overall spending rose modestly.
