Brazil's Bahia blocked from retrieving R$2 bn from BRB by STF

The Bahia state government’s attempt to move a R$2 billion credit operation from Banco de Brasília (BRB) to Banco do Brasil was halted after Minister Luiz Fux of the Supreme Federal Court suspended a lower‑court decision that had granted the withdrawal. The court warned the move could jeopardise the financial recovery agreement previously approved for BRB and affect obligations of the Federal District.

In a separate case, a court order kept Bradesco’s sole branch in the small Bahian town of Macururé open, preventing its planned closure. Judge Dilermando de Lima Costa Ferreira said the bank’s unilateral decision “fere o interesse público” because it left residents without essential local banking services, highlighting concerns over digital‑only access in rural areas.
