Brazil's Banco de Brasília faces liquidity crisis as central bank weighs intervention

Banco de Brasília (BRB) is experiencing severe liquidity problems. The Distrito Federal government has delayed payments for sectors such as health and education, effectively keeping cash in the bank to preserve its solvency. The Central Bank of Brazil has been notified of the situation and may have to decide on an intervention within days.

Governor Celina Leão has ruled out privatisation as a solution, leaving the bank to seek a loan of up to R$ 6.6 billion from the Fundo Garantidor de Créditos (FGC). Negotiations with banks to provide the loan have stalled, and court decisions that block the withdrawal of judicial deposits are further constraining BRL liquidity.

Earlier in May, a deal with Quadra Capital was reported as having deposited R$ 1 billion from assets acquired from Banco Master. The report was later corrected; the transaction never closed, no definitive contracts were signed, and the expected transfer of R$ 15 billion in assets collapsed. BRB is now looking for other buyers for those assets while continuing to pursue the FGC loan.
