Brazil's battery storage auction draws new factories and billions in investment
The Ministry of Mines and Energy is set to hold Brazil’s first auction for battery energy storage systems in December. The auction is intended to boost grid flexibility, reduce reliance on costly thermal‑power contracts, and support the integration of intermittent solar and wind generation. Industry groups such as FecomercioSP argue that the move should prompt a broader review of the Power Reserve Auction slated for 2026 to avoid long‑term tariff hikes.
The auction is expected to mobilise roughly R$ 8 billion in investments, according to the Brazilian Association of Energy Storage Solutions. Companies are already committing to new production capacity: WEG plans two factories in Itajaí (Santa Catarina) that could produce up to 2 GWh per year of battery systems, backed by a R$ 280 million BNDES loan, with operations aimed for late 2027. Swedish firm Anodox will locate its first Brazilian plant in Ceará, also targeting 2 GWh annually and creating about 590 jobs, with financing from the same public call. These projects are positioned to make Brazil a regional hub for battery storage in Latin America.
