Brazil's beef export ban by EU hits agribusiness amid trade and climate woes

The European Union removed Brazil from its list of authorised meat exporters, arguing that Brazil has not provided sufficient information on controls for antimicrobial use in livestock. The decision, affecting roughly US$1.8 billion in annual EU meat purchases, comes just months after the Mercosur‑EU trade agreement entered force and at a time when Brazil is already facing new US tariff investigations and the imminent suspension of meat sales to China once its quota is fulfilled.

Analysts warn that the ban undermines Brazil's credibility on food‑safety standards and could prompt other markets to scrutinise Brazilian products more closely. The export restrictions coincide with broader economic pressures, including the threat of a strong El Niño that may bring severe droughts, heatwaves and floods, further endangering the country's agribusiness sector.
