Brazil's biomethane market expands amid calls for innovation

The Brazilian biomethane market is experiencing significant growth, with production increasing by 75% in 2025 to approximately 1.06 million m³ per day. According to ABiogás, there are currently 21 plants authorized by the ANP, with an additional 48 undergoing the authorization process.

Despite this expansion, industry experts highlight a technological gap, noting that much of the current growth relies on mature technologies, such as biogas from landfills, rather than new innovations. There is a call to leverage Brazil's vast agricultural and urban waste reserves to develop competitive technological solutions.

Simultaneously, the Brazilian Association of Waste and Environment (Abrema) is advocating for biogas plants in landfills to be recognized as ‘green batteries’ in energy auctions. Abrema argues that these facilities provide reliable, 24-hour energy generation that can support the electrical system during crises. The association is also working with the Ministry of Mines and Energy to promote the diversification of the energy matrix and meet decarbonization goals set by the Future Fuel Law.
