Brazil's ex-president Jair Bolsonaro barred from visits during house arrest
On 17 July 2026, Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court upheld Jair Bolsonaro’s humanitarian house arrest and imposed new restrictions. All visits to Bolsonaro were suspended for 30 days, with exceptions only for doctors, physiotherapists and his lawyers. The ruling also bans any visit with a political‑electoral purpose until the end of the October 2026 elections. In addition, the 90‑day prohibition on Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s visits to his father was maintained. Moraes said the measures were necessary because Flávio had posted a handwritten letter from Jair on social media, violating the court‑ordered ban on the former president’s use of online platforms. The Prosecutor‑General’s Office (PGR) urged the court to keep the house arrest in place. Bolsonaro’s legal team asked the STF to allow Argentine President Javier Milei to visit the former president on 25 July, but the new restrictions would block that visit. The decision was criticised by several Bolsonaro allies, with Senator Rogério Marinho calling the measures “extravagant” and Flávio Bolsonaro describing them as “revenge”.
