Brazil's CBIC gathering in Porto Alegre outlines construction sector reforms
The Brazilian Construction Industry Chamber (CBIC) held its Southern Incorporators and Builders Meeting on 18 May in Porto Alegre, coordinated with the Rio Grande do Sul Industries Federation (FIERGS). The forum brought together builders, developers, policymakers and experts to examine the sector's challenges, including high interest rates, labor shortages, the ongoing tax‑reform debate and a proposal to cut the weekly workday from 44 to 40 hours. CBIC president‑elect Eduardo Aroeira Almeida warned that “the moment demands attention from the sector amid a political and economic transition,” and highlighted the need for structural administrative and fiscal reforms.
Panels also covered market trends and technology. Analyst Fabio Tadeu Araújo noted that demand for homeownership is strongest among 25‑35‑year‑olds, while high household debt and rates constrain purchases. Gustavo Martins de Paula of Sienge discussed artificial‑intelligence tools, saying “in the real‑estate market we still have time to adapt; we must test and implement now or risk falling behind.” Participants stressed that AI should augment, not replace, human judgment.
