Brazil's Consumer Protection Agencies Target Online Sports Betting Risks
The municipal consumer protection office (Procon) in Ilhéus, Bahia, warned residents that frequent use of online sports‑betting platforms can lead to financial loss, debt and strain on household budgets. It urged consumers to avoid using family‑expense money, loans or credit cards for gambling and highlighted the federal Centralized Self‑Exclusion Platform, which allows users to block their CPF from authorized betting sites. Director Wagner Ayres emphasized the need for consumers to recognize budget limits and plan to prevent indebtedness.
In Santa Catarina, PROCON/SC opened a virtual dialogue with major betting operators—including Superbet, KTO, Blaze, Rei do Pitaco and 1xBet—to strengthen oversight, ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, and promote transparent advertising. The agency discussed tools such as self‑exclusion and measures to curb ludopathy, noting that gambling‑related cases account for 10.9% of super‑indebtedness reports. Director Michele Alves said the initiative aims to protect consumer rights as the market expands.
