Brazil's court-ordered debt queue reaches R$ 69.7 billion
According to the Judicial Sentence Expenses Report from the Ministry of Planning and Budget, Brazil's queue of court-ordered debts (precatórios) involves 164,012 entries benefiting more than 270,000 individuals and legal entities. The total value of these debts is estimated at R$ 69.7 billion.
The majority of these obligations, totaling 97.76%, are for amounts up to R$ 1 million, amounting to R$ 32.45 billion. The largest sectors involved are Social Security, with R$ 23.6 billion, and personnel costs, with R$ 8.86 billion. Four specific debts exceed R$ 1 billion each, totaling R$ 4.99 billion.
Data for the 2027 budget shows a decrease in both the number of requests and total value compared to 2026. As of February 1, 2026, 117,855 precatórios totaling R$ 44.9 billion were presented for the 2027 budget. This reduction is attributed to technical changes introduced by Constitutional Amendment 136/2025, which moved the registration deadline from April 2 to February 1, potentially excluding those who failed to meet the earlier cutoff from the following year's budget.
