Brazil faces record household debt and rising rent arrears amid credit challenges

A new CNC survey shows 80.9% of Brazilian families were in debt in April 2026, the highest level on record, affecting households across income brackets. The figure translates to 81.7 million people, a 28.1% rise over the past decade, while total debt has surged 176%.

The surge is reflected in the housing market: Superlógica’s tenant‑payment index rose to 3.22% in May, with arrears reaching 6.31% for rentals up to R$1,000. Higher‑value leases also saw increases, indicating broader financial strain.

In response, pension funds have launched the “Poupadores do Futuro” program and the Marisele Prize to promote financial and retirement education in schools. Consumer‑protection groups warn that online loan requests are rife with fraud, urging borrowers to verify institutions and avoid upfront payments, noting, “Instituições sérias não condicionam a liberação do empréstimo a pagamentos antecipados.” Meanwhile, companies are treating credit recovery as a strategic financial tool rather than a reactive collection activity.
