Brazil's Crime‑Organized Program Inflicts R$1.6 bn Loss on Gangs

The federal "Program Brazil Contra o Crime Organizado," launched by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, released its first 30‑day balance. In 11 coordinated operations involving 9,964 security agents, the programme is estimated to have caused R$1.6 billion in financial damage to criminal factions. Authorities reported 7,961 arrests, the seizure of 82.5 tonnes of drugs and the freezing of R$523 million in assets belonging to organized‑crime groups. The initiative is backed by an R$11 billion investment plan, with R$1 billion from the federal budget and R$10 billion supplied as loans from the BNDES to state governments.

Federal Police officials stress that Brazilian gangs have evolved into complex, business‑like networks that operate in both illegal and formal economic sectors. They argue that a dual strategy—disrupting the financial base of these groups while reclaiming territories—combined with integrated policing across federal, state and municipal forces, is essential to weaken the groups’ influence and restore state control.
