Brazil's Culture Ministry seeks BRICS NDB financing for cultural infrastructure
Brazil's Ministry of Culture (MinC) executive secretary Márcio Tavares met with Dilma Rousseff, president of the BRICS New Development Bank, in Shanghai. Tavares presented a slate of projects for modernising Brazil's cultural infrastructure, including a green‑reconversion programme for existing venues, the creation of new Unified Arts and Sports Centers (CEUs) and the expansion of mobile cultural units (MovCeus). The proposals emphasise sustainability and the role of culture as a driver of income and ecological transition.
The discussion also covered the Brazil‑China Cultural Year 2026, a diplomatic initiative to deepen cultural ties, and the launch of the public streaming service Tela Brasil, which offers 555 Brazilian audiovisual works – including 19 Oscar‑submitted titles – free to the public. The platform was developed with the Federal University of Alagoas and funded by the National Audiovisual Sector Fund.
MinC seeks BRICS NDB support to fund these initiatives, aiming to strengthen the country's creative sector and expand access to culture nationwide.
