Brazil expands cultural funding, creative sector booms
Entities: Projeta Cultura · Cemig · Cris Moreira · Petrobras · Robozin
Overview
Petrobras’ 2026 Cultural Selection earmarked a record R$270 million within a R$287 million cultural investment that added tracks for game production and incubation. At least 15 % of the budget is reserved for each macro‑region and a quarter of projects must be led by women, Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+ creators or people with disabilities. President Magda Chambriard cited an economic multiplier of R$7.50 per real invested and previewed the Petrobras Futures Art and Technology centre in Rio’s Flamengo neighbourhood. The revived Brasil Criativo policy continues to drive growth: the creative economy added 577 000 jobs in 2023 – a 4 % rise that doubled the broader economy’s rate – employing about 1.26 million people and generating R$393.3 billion (3.59 % of GDP). Santa Catarina led regional expansion, while platforms such as UPAR aim to professionalise audiovisual creators. In July 2026 the Instituto Cultural Urukum in Goiás launched three calls (CERNE, GRÃO, PONTO), awarding R$70 000 in cash prizes and scholarships and reserving 40 % for Goiás residents. The Braztoa Sustainability Prize named 64 semifinalists from all macro‑regions, with the final ceremony scheduled for 12 November in Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul. The Edital Apoia 2026 joint initiative of the Centro Cultural Vale Maranhão and the Casa da Cultura de Canaã dos Carajás will grant R$10 000 to each of 40 cultural makers in Pará and Maranhão. The municipality of Brusque (Santa Catarina) opened five public calls funded by the National Aldir Blanc Culture Policy, allocating R$1.19 million to 42 agents and projects. On 15 July the precise budget of R$1,194,482 was disclosed, with individual awards of R$11,048 for creators, up to R$90,000 for ongoing projects and monthly subsidies for cultural spaces; the calls retain quota measures for Black, Indigenous and disabled participants.
