Brazil's Caixa renegotiates R$5.5 billion of debt under Novo Desenrola program

The state bank Caixa Econômica Federal announced that R$ 5.5 billion in outstanding debts were renegotiated through the Novo Desenrola Brasil initiative. The average discount granted was 79.3%. The total includes R$ 460.66 million for the Desenrola Famílias segment, R$ 2 billion for Desenrola Empresas, more than R$ 3 billion for Desenrola Fies, and about R$ 3.5 million for Desenrola Rural. Desenrola Famílias targets individuals earning up to five minimum wages, offering 1.99% monthly interest, discounts up to 90%, and repayment periods of 12 to 48 months with a minimum monthly installment of R$ 50 for contracts delayed between 91 and 720 days, due by 31 January 2026.

The Confederation of National Trade (CNC) noted that household indebtedness remains high, with 81.6% of families in debt in May 2026 and 29.9% overdue on payments. The CNC expects the renewed Desenrola 2.0, launched in May, to replicate the slowdown in default rates seen after the program’s first version in 2023.
