Brazil's democracy challenged by electoral doubts and party weakening

Flávio Bolsonaro has revived unfounded accusations that Brazil's electronic voting machines were produced by the Venezuelan firm Smartmatic, echoing claims made by his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. The Brazilian Electoral Court has repeatedly rejected these allegations, emphasizing that the voting system has been audited, tested publicly and overseen by multiple institutions, including the Ministry of Justice, the Armed Forces and the National Institute for Space Research. The repetition of such narratives raises concerns about public confidence in the electoral process ahead of upcoming elections.

At the same time, analysts note that Brazil's political parties have been losing strength and coherence since the end of the military regime. Historical parties with clear ideological identities have fragmented, and the current party system is marked by personalist candidacies and weak institutional structures. This weakening of parties diminishes organized political participation and undermines the quality of democratic debate, compounding the challenges posed by electoral misinformation.
