Brazil's Desenrola Program Renegotiates Over 100,000 Student Loans

The Desenrola Fies initiative, launched on May 13, has completed its first month with 100,209 renegotiated student‑loan contracts worth R$5.3 billion. Discounts of up to 99% reduced the outstanding balance to R$1.13 billion and generated R$283.2 million in upfront payments. The program’s most used option applied a 77% discount to contracts overdue more than 360 days, while beneficiaries registered in CadÚnico received a 92% discount.

Finance Minister Dario Durigan announced that a new "Desenrola for adimplentes" scheme will be unveiled by the end of June, aiming to cover 10 million debtors and reward borrowers who are up to date on their payments. He also signaled confidence that a constitutional amendment ending the 6‑by‑1 work schedule will pass in the Senate and warned that a proposed law on rural‑debt renegotiation could limit credit supply.
