Brazil's Diabetes Burden Highlights Benefit Eligibility and Screening
More than 16 million Brazilian adults live with diabetes, making the condition one of the country’s largest public‑health challenges alongside obesity. While the disease does not automatically grant social‑security benefits, the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) may provide Temporary Incapacity Aid or Permanent Disability Retirement when severe complications are medically confirmed.
Endocrinologists warn that type 2 diabetes often progresses silently, with symptoms such as persistent fatigue, excessive thirst, slow‑healing wounds, and blurred vision frequently overlooked. Lifestyle factors—including sedentary habits, ultra‑processed diets, stress and obesity—drive the rising prevalence, which now affects younger age groups as well. Early diagnostic exams and preventive monitoring are therefore crucial to avoid serious complications such as cardiovascular disease, renal failure, vision loss and neuropathy.
