Brazil’s digital banking sector: overview of key players and services
Over the past decade Brazil’s financial system has shifted from branch‑based banking to mobile‑first digital banks. Customers can open a full account in minutes using a smartphone, with services such as card issuance, transfers, investments and loans delivered entirely online. Digital banks differ from traditional banks and fintechs by operating with little or no physical branches, which lowers administrative costs and allows reduced fees.
The most prominent digital banks for individuals include Nubank, the region’s largest with free accounts, international credit cards and automatic savings; Banco Inter, a super‑app offering cards, investments, home‑broker and foreign‑exchange; C6 Bank, known for premium cards and point‑earning programs; PagBank, part of the PagSeguro ecosystem; and PicPay, which expanded from a digital wallet to a full‑service account. For business customers, notable providers are Cora, focusing on small firms with free PJ accounts and invoicing tools; Inter’s corporate suite; and C6 Bank’s PJ offerings.
These platforms aim to simplify banking, reduce costs and provide a wider range of financial products through mobile applications.
