Brazil-Argentina digital fraud surge persists
Entities: Brazil · Mato Grosso · Comando Vermelho (CV) · Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC)
Overview
By late 2026 Brazil’s financial services were overwhelmingly digital, with 82 % of transactions handled by digital banks and mobile usage topping 155 billion per year. The Central Bank’s phase‑out of older cash notes and the ubiquity of the Pix instant‑payment system (used by 76.4 % of the population in 2024) underpin this shift, while AI and automation have spread across enterprises. In the first half of 2026 indications of financial fraud rose 10.26 % to more than 9 million cases, a surge linked to Central Bank Resolution 501 and the Unified Fraud Registry (Rufra). A Quod study confirmed that 78 % of attempts involved mobile phones, 94 % targeted checking accounts, 85 % used Pix and 40 % were social‑engineering scams. About 3.1 million people were victims, 799 000 of them experiencing repeated attacks. Danilo Coelho of Quod said the rise “reflects the maturation of the market’s defenses” as institutions now detect and report attempts that previously went unnoticed. Police reports from May and June recorded dozens of estelionato incidents across Brazil and Argentina, including notable cases in Pato Bragado (Argentina) and Bento Gonçalves (Brazil). Common schemes involve fake bank calls, impersonated relatives on messaging apps, cloned accounts, bogus vehicle sales and advance‑payment requests for alleged judicial releases. Authorities continue to urge verification of contacts, use of the Central Bank’s refund mechanism and rapid community reporting. The Federal Nursing Council’s recent seminar highlighted AI‑driven administrative tools, and corporate finance leaders noted that automating financial processes cuts manual errors, accelerates reconciliations and improves cash‑flow visibility, bolstering profitability amid economic volatility. A 2025 security report showed a record 2,261,055 estelionato cases – a 2.7 % rise over 2024 and a 429.8 % increase since 2018 – with digital fraud up 20.6 % year‑on‑year.
