Brazil's Digital Markets Bill Gains Momentum in Congress

Finance Minister Dario Durigan met with party leaders in the Chamber of Deputies to present the government's digital markets bill, which seeks to regulate large online platforms. The meeting, attended by officials from the Finance Ministry, the Secretariat of Social Communication and the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), aimed to clarify the bill’s provisions, address big‑tech objections and build a consensus for an upcoming vote.

The proposal, drafted by the Finance Ministry, would broaden CADE’s preventive powers against anti‑competitive practices and create a new category of “systemic platforms” for dominant digital firms. Lawmakers are expected to consider the bill this week as the Congress prepares for a recess, with the government also negotiating other priority measures such as the 6×1 work‑hour scale repeal and public‑security reforms.
