Brazil's Education Ministry inaugurates Indigenous campus facilities and five schools in Marajó
The Ministry of Education (MEC) inaugurated a suite of new academic facilities for indigenous students at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) on June 10, 2026. The openings took place on the Aquidauana and Campo Grande campuses and included an Indigenous Housing unit, a computer laboratory, an Indigenous LabCrié, a Green Room, an Academic Lounge, a playroom and a lactancy room, as well as the Autocine student centre – a modular two‑storey building with kitchens, coworking spaces, a cafeteria, library, shops and event venues. Minister Leonardo Barchini, UFMS rector Camila Celeste and indigenous students attended the ceremony.
On June 8–9, MEC, through the National Fund for Education Development (FNDE), opened five new schools in the Marajó archipelago of Pará – one in Breves, one in Bagre and three in Melgaço. The schools, built under the National Pact for the Resumption of Education Works, provide capacity for roughly 840 students and feature classrooms, libraries, computer and science labs, and covered sports courts. FNDE president Fernanda Pacobahyba highlighted the projects’ role in extending public education to rural and riverside communities that have faced long‑standing infrastructure delays.
