Brazil's Education Ministry moves up enrollment dates for student loan and scholarship programs

In a public hearing at the Chamber of Deputies, students and representatives of private higher‑education institutions urged the government to tighten rules for the Fundo de Financiamento Estudantil (FIES). They highlighted sharp tuition increases for medical courses, calling for stricter oversight and a link between loan repayments and graduates’ income. Student leader João Victor Monteiro da Silva warned, “Precisamos de fiscalização,” and officials acknowledged that reforms are under discussion.

Separately, the Ministry of Education announced an accelerated calendar for the 2023 entry processes of the Sistema de Seleção Unificada (Sisu), the Programa Universidade para Todos (Prouni) and FIES. Applications for Sisu will run 16‑24 February, Prouni 28 February‑3 March, and FIES 7‑10 March, with results to follow in late February and March. The changes aim to better align selection periods with the academic schedules of public and private institutions.
