Brazil's Electoral Justice Moves on Lula and Political Satire Cases

The São Paulo Regional Electoral Prosecutor’s Office issued a July 3 opinion recommending that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva be penalised for alleged early‑campaign propaganda. The recommendation stems from Lula’s comments during a May 19 government event launching the Move Brasil program, where he praised pre‑senatorial candidates Marina Silva and Simone Tebet and urged voters to support them. The case, filed by the Missão party, is awaiting a decision from the regional electoral court, with the national election calendar barring campaign activity until August 16.

Separately, the Electoral Public Ministry issued a June 10 opinion rejecting a request to forbid former mayor Emanuel Pinheiro from referring to ex‑governor Mauro Mendes as “Mauro Master”. The MP argued that the nickname falls within protected political criticism and freedom of expression, and found no explicit call for a “no‑vote” directive. The related injunction against the nickname had already been denied by a judge, and the MP concluded that electoral intervention should be limited to cases of clear personal defamation, which it did not find here.
