Brazil's electric vehicle market faces booming demand and rising import costs
Great Wall Motors' Ora 5 compact electric SUV has generated strong consumer interest in Brazil, with more than 4,000 reservations placed within two weeks of launch at a promotional price of R$159,000. The surge in orders has created a waiting period of over 120 days for delivery, pushing the first batch of vehicles to arrive in November.
In contrast, the JMEV Emova Easy and its higher‑trim Urban variant, previously priced at R$69,990 and R$99,990, have been withdrawn from the market by importer E‑Motors Brasil. The suspension follows a sharp increase in maritime freight costs from US$1,800 to US$10,200 per 40‑foot container and a rise in Brazil's import tax on fully electric cars to 35%, making the original price structure untenable. The importer will fully refund existing reservations and hopes to resume sales once shipping costs fall.
Both developments highlight the volatility of Brazil's nascent electric‑vehicle segment, where strong demand coexists with costly import logistics and regulatory pricing pressures.
