Brazil's ethanol outpaces gasoline, saving up to R$80 per tank

The price of hydrated ethanol fell 2.78% in Rio Grande do Norte during the week of 26 July–1 August, the sharpest state‑level decline in Brazil. Nationwide, the average ethanol price dropped 0.5% to R$4.00 per litre, still 31% above the national gasoline average.

In São Paulo, ethanol averaged R$3.70 per litre while gasoline was R$6.39, giving consumers an effective saving of R$1.32 per kilometre‑equivalent litre – roughly R$79 on a full 60‑litre tank. UNICA reports this is the greatest economic advantage since 2018 and the second‑largest since ANP began tracking prices in 2013. The advantage was confirmed in all surveyed municipalities across São Paulo, Paraná, Goiás, Mato Grande, Mato Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais, with parity ratios as low as 55% in Mato Grande.

UNICA notes that the stronger ethanol position reduces Brazil’s exposure to international oil‑price shocks and supports the country’s biofuel‑driven energy mix under the new Fuel Law that took effect on 1 August.
