Brazil ethanol price advantage widens, strike threatens fuel

Overview

The ethanol price advantage deepened through July, with the ANP’s 28 June–4 July survey showing ethanol out‑competing gasoline in nine states and the Federal District, averaging a 61.7 % parity gap. Ethanol prices slipped 0.49 % to R$ 4.06 /L, while diesel and gasoline fell roughly 7 % and 5.8 % year‑to‑date. Consumer‑protection monitoring highlighted substantial station‑to‑station spreads: in Campo Grande, diesel S500 varied between R$ 6.76 and R$ 7.49 per litre, gasoline ranged 11.31 % across stations, and ethanol’s lowest price was R$ 3.77 /L.

In Manaus, LPG cylinder prices shifted modestly and gasoline rose to R$ 7.29 /L, prompting a Procon‑AM probe into possible price abuse. A separate ANP report noted Goiás gasoline averaging R$ 6.69 /L, about R$ 0.11 above the national mean, with a per‑station spread of roughly R$ 1.20.

Procon inspections in Blumenau identified unjustified price hikes at 20 of 66 stations, issuing sanctions and allowing defenses. Meanwhile, Joinville’s Chamber of Businesspeople launched a subscription discount scheme (CDL Pop), offering up to R$ 0.30 per litre on gasoline and greater savings on diesel for participating drivers.

Fuel‑price volatility continues amid the expanding ethanol‑gasoline gap and the looming fuel‑sector strike.
