Brazil's Federal District Leads Diabetes Rates as Chronic Disease Risks Rise Nationwide

A survey by the Brazilian Diabetes Society using Vigitel Brazil 2023 data found that 12.1% of adults in the Federal District have a medical diagnosis of diabetes, the highest prevalence among Brazil's capital cities and equal to São Paulo. The rate is nearly two percentage points above the national average of 10.2%, and treatment adherence in the Central-West region is the lowest in the country at 65.8%, raising concerns about avoidable complications.

A separate Datafolha poll commissioned by ACT Promoção da Saúde revealed that 92% of Brazilian adults are worried about chronic non‑communicable diseases. Respondents linked smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, unhealthy diets, sedentary lifestyles, air pollution and climate‑related events such as heatwaves and floods to higher disease risk. The majority called for clearer product information from companies and broader public‑health messaging to improve prevention.
