Brazil's finance hub under scrutiny as Northeast builds its own market

Digital influencer Raul Sena, creator of the "Investidor Sardinha" channel, has criticised the traditional financial hub on Avenida Faria Lima for operating in a "bubble" that is disconnected from Brazil’s real economy. Sena argues that many fund managers and bankers focus on short‑term speculation, high fees and portfolio churn, prioritising internal wealth over tangible product development, technology and services that benefit ordinary citizens and small businesses.

At the same time, the financial landscape outside São Paulo is changing. Data from ANBIMA show that assets managed by firms in Brazil’s Northeast reached about R$55 billion in 2025, a growth of more than 20% from the previous year. The region is seeing a rise in independent managers and a shift from merely distributing products to originating operations, structuring deals and providing local companies with capital. While the Southeast remains the dominant centre, the Northeast’s emerging ecosystem signals a gradual diversification of Brazil’s financial sector.
