Brazil's fiscal adjustment identified as key challenge for next administration

Economists and market analysts indicate that the primary challenge for Brazil’s next administration will be implementing a credible fiscal adjustment plan to stabilize public debt. According to Kinea Investimentos, an adjustment of approximately 2% of GDP may be necessary to stabilize debt and allow for a more favorable interest rate trajectory.

Public debt in Brazil reached R$ 11.05 trillion in August, representing 82.9% of the GDP, the highest level since the pandemic in April 2021. Experts warn that without concrete measures to balance public accounts, investor distrust could drive up interest rates, inflation, and the value of the dollar, ultimately hindering economic growth and investment.

Analysts suggest that discussions regarding these fiscal measures should begin during the transition period to ensure effectiveness by 2027. Former Finance Minister Maílson da Nóbrega emphasized the need for the incoming president to present clear priorities and actions immediately to prevent the deterioration of macroeconomic expectations.
