Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro to stay under house arrest

Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that former President Jair Bolsonaro, 71, may remain under house arrest for health reasons. Bolsonaro is serving a 27‑year sentence for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. His defence argued that he would receive better medical care at home, and Moraes described the continuation of the humanitarian house arrest as "reasonable, appropriate and proportionate." The decision follows a March order allowing 90 days of house arrest after Bolsonaro was hospitalized with pneumonia, a recent seizure of a firearm belonging to a member of his security detail, and a prosecutor’s recommendation to keep him under house arrest despite that incident.
