Brazil's Gov.br digital ID platform faces governance, AI security issues

A Tribunal de Contas da União (TCU) audit of the Gov.br digital identity platform, used by about 173 million Brazilians to access more than 4,600 public services, highlighted serious governance shortcomings. While the system shows maturity in identity‑policy management, the report identified gaps in risk management, continuous monitoring, lifecycle review of identities and uniform security levels. The audit warned that inconsistencies between the Secretariat of Digital Government’s guidelines and their implementation leave critical services exposed with minimal authentication.

A separate security study by Check Point Research warned that advances in artificial intelligence now allow the creation of highly convincing synthetic faces, voices, documents and videos. Traditional biometric checks—face, voice or video—are no longer reliable on their own, with trained observers correctly identifying synthetic media only about 40 % of the time. The report recommends that biometric methods become one layer within a multi‑factor authentication framework that also evaluates context, user behavior and device validation.
