Brazil's grid operator curtails 20 GW renewable output during World Cup match

During the Brazil‑Japan World Cup match on 29 July, Brazil’s National Electric System Operator (ONS) reduced approximately 20 GW of wind and solar generation to maintain stability as electricity demand fell sharply while millions watched the game. The operator said the cut was needed because high renewable output combined with unusually low consumption threatened the controllability of the national grid.

When the match ended, consumption surged, increasing the system load from about 66.7 GW to roughly 91.8 GW within two hours – a rise of more than 25 GW, comparable to the combined capacity of the Itaipu and Belo Monte hydro plants. The rapid drop in solar production as sunset approached required other sources, such as hydro‑electric and thermal plants, to quickly cover the gap, underscoring the operational challenges of integrating large‑scale renewable generation.
